reaking news! This September we will begin with the introduction of the term "primeval forests" into Ukrainian environmental legislation.

Today, August 31, the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed the Law on amendments to some legislative acts of Ukraine on conservation of the primeval forests under the Framework Convention on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Carpathians (№4480). The act prohibits logging in primeval forests, introduces administrative responsibility for the destruction and damage of primeval forests.

The official definition of primeval forests is "natural forests which have not been influenced directly by human activities in their development". The document had a complex pathway from its development to signing. It was developed by public environmental organizations together with people’s deputies Igor Lutsenko, Ostap Yednak and Natalia Novak. The signatories of the draft law are 13 deputies of Ukraine.

The law is aimed at the protection of the Ukrainian part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe", the implementation of the Carpathian Convention and the Pan-European Strategy for the Conservation of Biological and Landscape Diversity.

The team of the "Carpathian Primeval Forest Conservation" project expresses its gratitude to the people’s deputies of Ukraine, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine, singer Ruslana Lyzhychko, NGOs and concerned citizens for this initiative support.
