he area of the Project’s activity within the National Nature Park "Hutsulshchyna" constitutes part of the territory of Park of 32271 ha.
Nature conservation priority of the project area is conserved fragments of spruce and beech old-growth and primeval forests and natural beech forests with admixture of fir and sycamore.

The problem in the territory of NPP arises on the lands given to Park without withdrawal from the permanent land-users. Their area is 12,083 ha. Forest management regime, which is currently applied there, contradicts to the current environmental legislation. Consequently, the NPP is not able to ensure the full protection of natural complexes of reserved territory. To optimize the functional structure of the NPP it is proposed to withdraw the lands and transfer them to the Park for the permanent use. On these lands, by the preliminary estimation, remained beech, sycamore-beech and fir old-growth and primeval forests. According to preliminary estimates, the total area of the forests is about 1320.7 ha (final area will be determined after the field surveys in the framework of the implemented project). Some lands planned for extension of the Park are part of the protected areas: landscape reserve "Kamenets", natural sanctuary "Kamenets, landscape reserve" Gregit”, natural reserve" Rotul".

The flora of lands proposed for extension consists of 20 species listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine (2009). Among them are: Epipactis purpurata, Epipactis helleborine, Neottia nidus-avis, Huperzia selago, Lilium martagon, Cephalanthera longifolia, Dactylorhiza majalis, Dactylorhiza fuchsia, Platanthera bifolia, Gymnadenia conopsea, Gymnadenia densiflora, Pseudorchis albida, Listera ovate, Traunsteinera globosa, Cephalanthera longifolia, Lycopodium annotinum, Atropa belladonna, Colchicum autumnale, Crocus heuffelianus, Lunaria rediviva, Corallorhiza trifida, Pinus cembra. Nine species of rare fungi also grow here: Mutinus caninus, Gomphus clavatus, Polyporus umbellatus, Lactarius lignyotus, Phylloporus pelletieri, Russula turci, Catathelasma imperial, Boletus regius, Strobilomyces strobilaceus.

In the structure of vegetation - four plant communities are listed in the Green Data Book of Ukraine (2009).These are beech forests with dominance in the stand of the Lunaria rediviva, beech forests with the dominance in the stand of Asplenium scolopendrium, gray alder groups with dominance of Matteuccia struthiopteris in the stand, spruce forests with the dominance of Lycopodium annotinum in stand.

Fauna includes more than 1,400 species of animals. 65 of them are listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine (2009), including Ursus arctos, Felis sylvestris, Lynx lynx, Lutra lutra, Salamandra salamandra, Lissotriton montandoni, Mesotriton alpestris, Tetrao urogallus, Tetrastes bonasia, Picus viridis, Picoides tridactylus, Strix uralensis, Glaucidium passerinum, Ciconia nigra and others.

In Kosmatske midlands, in zone of old-growth and primeval spruce forests, are located remnants of ancient (older than 5 million years old) megalithic sanctuaries, in particular, astronomical calendar-sanctuary on mountain Lysyna Kosmatska.
